St. Hugh of Lincoln was once asked by a rustic to change his son’s luck by changing his name. Hearing the boy's name was John, he turned to the superstitious father: “What more beautiful name could you wish for for your son? ‘John’ signifies the grace of God. Would you have him called fork or rake? You see what a dreadful state of mind your request has thrown me into. I shall give you cause to remember it.” And he imposed a severe penance. (Quoted by Edward Ingram Watkin, in his work “Neglected Saints” pub. by Sheed and Ward, New York, 1955.)
