“Who the day before He suffered took bread into his holy and venerable hands, blessed it, broke, and gave it to His disciples, saying ‘Take ye, and eat ye all, of this’.” Pope St. Alexander I  (According to Fr. Thomas Meyrick, in his work “Lives of the Early Popes: St. Peter to the Time of Charlemagne” pub. 1878, who says: “Pope Alexander added the words in the Mass which precede the Consecration — ‘Qui pridie quam pateretur’ — in memory of Christ’s Passion.”)
