"Beloved Father, I urge you to calm your worries about your spirit, because they seem to me to be a true waste of time in relation to eternity. What is worse is that.... your good deeds could become sullied, if you will allow me to use that word, by some lack of trust in God's goodness....
... That is a serious injustice the soul does to our heavenly Bridegroom and in consequence, alas! we are deprived of so many graces by our sweetest Lord precisely because the door of our heart is not open to him with holy confidence. If a soul does not resolve to come out of that state, it draws many chastisements to itself.
Do not think my assertion is exaggerated, dear father. Let us remember the immense number of God's people in the desert who did not set foot in the Promised Land through a lack of trust. Even their own leader, Moses, who hesitated as he struck the rock [in anger] for water to quench to people's thirst, was severely punished and did not enter the Promised Land."
