St. Maximilian of Numidia, a conscientious objector to fighting in a pagan army, was informed by his judge that there were other Christians who fought in the same army, to which he replied: “That is their business. I also am a Christian and I cannot serve.” He was thus martyred under the crime of “Contempt of the army.” (Quoted by Edward Ingram Watkin, in his work “Neglected Saints” pub. by Sheed and Ward, New York, 1955.)
