"Be at peace with your own soul, then heaven and earth will be at peace with you."
- St. Jerome
“The life of every human being is sacred as the creation of God, and is of infinite value because He created each person including the unborn child. The image of God is on that unborn child…”
—Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
“If a soul is not clothed with the teachings of the Church he cannot merit to have Jesus seated in him."
“Whosoever you are who introduce new doctrines, I beseech you to spare the ears of Romans! Spare that faith which was commended by the voice of an Apostle. Why should you attempt to teach us, at the end of hundreds of years, that which we never heard before? Why bring forward what Peter and Paul did not will to make known? Until this day, the world was Christian without your doctrine. Thus, I hold as an old man onto that faith wherein I was regenerated as a boy.”
“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. 'Til your good is better and your better is best."
“Love is not to be purchased, and affection has no price."
“Be ever engaged, so that whenever the devil calls he may find you occupied."
St. Jerome, pray for us!
"All the sins of your life seem to be rising up against you. Don't give up hope! On the contrary, call your holy Mother Mary, with the faith and abandonment of a child. She will bring peace to your soul."
- St. Josemaria Escriva
"Here is a rule for everyday life: do not do anything you cannot offer to God." St. John Vianney (1786-1859)
“May the good pleasure of God be forever the peace and calm of your afflicted hearts.”
– St. Vincent de Paul
"Never has the thought of revenge crossed my mind. I have prayed for them (the slanderers) and I pray. Perhaps sometimes I have said to the Lord; "Lord if to convert them a punishment is necessary, then give it so they may be saved" St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"Don't worry about taking up my time, because the time best spent is that spent in the sanctification of souls, and I don't know how to thank our Heavenly Father when he presents me some souls that I can help in some way."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"It is well for us in America to recall this basic distinction between the principle and the method of democracy, for too many of us believe that the principle of democracy began with the foundation of America, and that if America ever ceased to exist, democracy would pass out of the world. It would be well to recall that the Church was preaching the dignity of man over 1700 years before our government came into being." Archbishop Fulton Sheen
"I once picked up a woman from a garbage dump and she was burning with fever; she was in her last days and her only lament was: ‘My son did this to me.’ I begged her: You must forgive your son. In a moment of madness, when he was not himself, he did a thing he regrets. Be a mother to him, forgive him. It took me a long time to make her say: ‘I forgive my son.’ Just before she died in my arms, she was able to say that with a real forgiveness. She was not concerned that she was dying. The breaking of the heart was that her son did not want her. This is something you and I can understand."
- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
"Forgive everyone with Christian charity." St. Pio of Pietrelcina(1887-1968)

"Whatever you do, think not of yourself, but of God."   - St. Vincent Ferrer
"I bind to myself today the power in the love of the Seraphim, in the obedience of the Angels, in the ministration of the Archangels, in the hope of Resurrection unto reward, in the prayers of the Patriarchs, in the predictions of the Prophets, in the preaching of the Apostles, in the faith of the Confessors, in the purity of the holy Virgins, in the deeds of Righteous men."  - St. Patrick of Ireland
“The decline of belief in Angels does not prove the world has gotten wiser, but rather that it has become materialistic. The principle reason why angels have lost their following is because angels are created substances of pure intelligence, but devoid of all bodily qualities and characteristics. The modern lives in a closed universe in the sense that man is believed to be just an animal devoid of an immortal soul, and with no other purpose in life than to attain security and enjoy pleasure.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen

"When one loves, one does not calculate."  St. Therese Of Lisieux
“The disintegration of rational society started in the drift from the hearth and the family; the solution must be a drift back.”  G.K. Chesterton
"From Mary we learn to surrender to God's Will in all things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ her Son and the Son of God!"  Pope St. John Paul II
“Be not afraid to tell Jesus that you love Him; even though it be without feeling, this is the way to oblige Him to help you, and carry you like a little child too feeble to walk.” — St. Therese of Lisieux
"If you invoke the Blessed Virgin when you are tempted, she will come at once to your help, and Satan will leave you." - Saint John Vianney
"God did not ask us to follow Him because He needed our help, but because He knew that loving Him would make us whole." St. Irenaeus Lyons (ca. 130 – 202)
“Don’t waste time in your life trying to get even with your enemies. The grave is a tremendous equalizer. Six weeks after you all are dead, you’ll look pretty much the same. Let the Lord take care of those whom you think have harmed you. All you have to do is love and forgive. Try to forget and leave all else to the Master.”  – Mother Angelica
“Christ’s coming into the world was not like that of a sightseer to a strange city, but rather like that of an artist visiting His own studio, or an author paging the books he himself has written, for in becoming incarnate the Divine Word was tabernacling Himself in His own creation. His human nature in no way limited His Divine Wisdom, but it did give Him a new way of communicating it to humans, and one quite comfortable to their own nature. Through a human tongue like their own, speaking their own dialect, people hear him say “I am the light of the world’” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (In the Fullness of Time)

"Along this path of prayer, self knowledge and the thought of one's sins is the bread with which all palates must be fed no matter how delicate they may be; they cannot be sustained without this bread."  ST.Teresa of Avila (Life 13.15)
"'Mary is said to be 'fair as the moon'.' For as the moon enlightens and benefits the lowest creatures on earth, so does Mary enlighten and succor the most unworthy sinners." (St. Alphonsus Liguori, Doctor of the Church)

Blessed Memorial of St. Vincent de Paul!

“The most powerful weapon to conquer the devil is humility. For as he does not know at all how to employ it, neither does he know how to defend himself from it.”
“Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity."
“Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His Mercy from us?”
St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us!
“Mary, my dearest mother, give me your heart so beautiful, so pure, so immaculate, so full of love and humility, that I may receive Jesus as you did–and go in haste to give him to others.”
- Blessed Teresa of Cacutta
"Don't try excessively, to heal your heart, as your efforts would only make it more infirm. Don't make too great an effort to overcome your temptations, as this violence would only make them stronger. Despise them and don't dwell on them too much."   St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"The saints did not become saints without many a sacrifice and many a struggle." St. John Viannney (1786-1859)
“The great tragedy of life is not so much what men have suffered, but what they have missed. And what greater tragedy is there than to miss the peace of sin forgiven? There is not a man living who, if he willed it, could not enjoy the spiritual food and drink which God serves to all who ask.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen
"When you say your Rosary, the angels rejoice, the Blessed Trinity delights in it, my Son finds joy in it too, and I myself am happier than you can possibly guess. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, there is nothing in the Church that I love as much as the Rosary."  - Our Lady to Blessed Alan de la Roche

"The world being unworthy to receive the Son of God directly from the hands of the Father, he gave his Son to Mary for the world to receive him from her."  - Saint Augustine, Father and Doctor of the Church
“ The Rosary is the Weapon. ”  - St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"The saints did not become saints without many a sacrifice and many a struggle." St. John Viannney (1786-1859)
"Oh, strong love of God! And how true it is that nothing seems impossible to the one who loves! "  - St. Teresa of Avila
“It may take a long time for Western civilization to realize that the good it is seeking is the good that it left. The world will not quickly realize that the Church which it believed was so restraining to liberty is really the only force that can make us free, and that which was so much behind the times is the only institution which has survived the times.” Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen (The Prodigal World)
" Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall."
- Psalm 55:22
“Now if there ever was a good work, it is that of nursing the sick, so much so indeed that it surpasses all others in value.”
– St. Vincent de Paul

"Let no one doubt concerning the goodness of God; even if a person's sins were as dark as night, God's mercy is stronger than our misery. One thing alone is necessary: that the sinner set ajar the door of his heart, be it ever so little, to let in a ray of God's merciful grace, and then God will do the rest". (Diary 1507 of St. Faustina)
"Be firm. Be virile. Be a man. And then...be a saint." St. Josemaria Escriva (1902.-1975.)
"The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying."
- Pope Leo XIII
"Let us keep in mind what the divine Master said: in our patience we will possess our souls."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina
“We belong to God by his grace. What else do we wish, then, but to please him? If we are contradicted, this is not surprising; what merit is there in not being crossed? And who is there that can escape it? For every little contradiction, should one stop doing good? Good which gives glory to God?”
– St. Vincent de Paul

"Anxiety is one of the greatest traitors that real virtue and solid devotion can ever have. . .One must be careful of this on all occasions, particularly at prayer. And to better succeed it would be well to remember that the graces and consolations of prayer are not waters of this earth, but of Heaven. Therefore all our efforts are not sufficient to make them fall, even though it is necessary to prepare oneself with great diligence but always humbly and tranquilly."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"In my opinion we shall never completely know ourselves if we don't strive to know God. By gazing at His grandeur, we shall see our own lowliness; by looking at His purity, we shall see our own filth; by pondering His humility, we shall see how far we are from being humble." St Teresa of Avila ( Castle 1.2.9 )
“Never once did Our Lord tell these witnesses of His to write. He Himself only wrote once in His Life, and that was on the sand. But He did tell them to preach in His Name and to be witnesses to Him to the ends of the earth, until the consummation of time. Hence those who take this or that text out of the Bible to prove something are isolating it from the historical atmosphere in which it arose, and from the word of mouth which passed Christ’s truth.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Way to Inner Peace)

“Always forward, never back.”  —Saint Junipero Serra

"Life is nothing but a constant struggle against oneself, and it does not open to beauty without the cost of suffering. Always keep Jesus company in Gethsemane and He will know how to comfort you in the hours of anguish that will come."  (St. Pio of Pietrelcina)
“Go to the Madonna. Love her! Always say the Rosary. Say it well. Say it as often as you can! Be souls of prayer. Never tire of praying, it is what is essential. Prayer shakes the Heart of God, it obtains necessary graces!” (St. Pio of Pietrelcina)
TURN your attention upon yourself and beware of judging the deeds of other men, for in judging others a man labors vainly, often makes mistakes, and easily sins; whereas, in judging and taking stock of himself he does something that is always profitable.
We frequently judge that things are as we wish them to be, for through personal feeling true perspective is easily lost.
If God were the sole object of our desire, we should not be disturbed so easily by opposition to our opinions. But often something lurks within or happens from without to draw us along with it.
Many, unawares, seek themselves in the things they do. They seem even to enjoy peace of mind when things happen according to their wish and liking, but if otherwise than they desire, they are soon disturbed and saddened. Differences of feeling and opinion often divide friends and acquaintances, even those who are religious and devout.
An old habit is hard to break, and no one is willing to be led farther than he can see.
If you rely more upon your intelligence or industry than upon the virtue of submission to Jesus Christ, you will hardly, and in any case slowly, become an enlightened man. God wants us to be completely subject to Him and, through ardent love, to rise above all human wisdom.
The Imitation of Christ
Thomas à Kempis
The Fourteenth Chapter
What I advise strongly is not to abandon prayer, for in prayer people will understand what they are doing and win repentance from the Lord and fortitude lift themselves up.  St. Teresa of Avila( Life ch 15.3 )
“Are you capable of risking your life for someone? Do it for Christ.” (Pope St. John Paul II)

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

"Let us always keep before our eyes the fact that here on earth we are on a battlefield and that in Paradise we shall receive the crown of victory; that this is a testing-ground and the prize will be awarded up above; that we are now in a land of exile while our true homeland is Heaven to which we must continually aspire."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina
“Let us leave everything to serve God and the neighbor.”  – St. Vincent de Paul
"It is a sign of God's love to me," says St. Thomas of Villanova, "a sign of future salvation, when the Lord gives me to drink of the cup of suffering."  - St. Thomas Villa Nova
“Advertising tries to stimulate our sensuous desires, converting luxuries into necessities, but it only intensifies man’s inner misery. The business world is bent on creating hungers which its wares never satisfy, and thus it adds to the frustrations and broken minds of our times.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Lift Up Your Heart)

"If we really want to experience the living presence of Jesus, do not bypass occasions of inconveniences, misunderstanding, criticism, insult and pain. Jesus who changed water into wine at Cana has the power to change our momentary sorrow into eternal joy, provided we live in His presence and make Him the most significant person in our life and activity."
- Culled from St. Alphonsa, An Icon of Suffering
The sinner who is sorry for his sins is closer to God than the just man who boasts of his good works. ~St. Pio of Pietrelcina
“The holy Rosary is a powerful weapon. Use it with confidence and you’ll be amazed at the results.” -St. Josemaria Escriva
“Do not look forward to what might happen tomorrow. The same everlasting Father who cares for you today, will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either he will shield you from suffering, or he will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.” Saint Francis de Sales
"Let us not imagine that we obscure the glory of the Son by the great praise we lavish on the Mother; for the more she is honored, the greater is the glory of her Son. There can be no doubt that whatever we say in praise of the Mother gives equal praise to the Son." (“Non est dubium, quicquid in laudibus matris profermius, ad filium pertinere.”)  -Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Father and Doctor of the Church, Horn. 4, Sup. Miss.
"I do not see what more I shall have in heaven, she said. It is true I shall see the good God; but as to being with him, I am wholly with him already upon earth." - St. Thérèse of Lisieux
"If one were to consider how much Jesus has suffered, one would not commit the smallest sin." St. Gianna (1922 – 1962)
“It is no small pity, and should cause us no little shame, that, through our own fault, we do not understand ourselves, or know who we are.” (St. Teresa of Avila, Doctor of the Church, Interior Castle, First Mansion, Chapter 1)
"He who trusts in God is sheltered and protected by His mercy. " - St. Bernard
“We should not indeed be doing enough for God and our neighbor if we supplied the sick merely with nourishment and medicine, and if we did not assist them with the spiritual services we owe them.”
– St. Vincent de Paul
"He who has given me the desire will also give me the strength to do the impossible."
- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
“The most honest of those who appear on radio or television, as regards to their material, are the comedians. At the end of every program, regardless of who the comedian is, there will always be found listed the names of his writers. The comedians admit, though they speak the humorous lines, that they actually are indebted to others for putting them in their mouths. One never sees on a television screen at the end of a program given by a politician the names of the one who wrote his speech. Here we pay tribute to the four writers who have given us the greatest inspiration: 1. A Collector of internal revenue 2. A reporter 3. A physician 4. An official in a fishing company. These four writers are perhaps better known as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Though none of them has written the material that is used in our books, they nevertheless have given us the philosophy and theology behind all that we write.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Thinking Life Through)

“Our dear Savior was never in extremes.”  – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
"The Immaculate alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. She seeks souls that will consecrate themselves entirely to her, that will become in her hands forceful instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spread of God's kingdom." - St. Maximilian Kolbe
"He who labors as he prays lifts his heart to God with his hands." St. Benedict (480 – 543)
"You and I, we are the Church, no? We have to share with our people. Suffering today is because people are hoarding, not giving, not sharing. Jesus made it very clear. Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me. Give a glass of water, you give it to me. Receive a little child, you receive me." - Blessed  Teresa of Calcutta
"With what procrastinations do you wait, since from this very moment you can love God in your heart?" + St John of the Cross
"If you ever feel distressed during your day, call upon our Lady, just say this simple prayer: 'Mary, Mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now.' I must admit, this prayer has never failed me."
- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
“On the day of my ordination, I made two resolutions: 1. I would offer the Holy Eucharist every Saturday in honor of the Blessed Mother to solicit her protection on my priesthood. The Epistle to the Hebrews bids the priest offer sacrifices not only for others, but also for himself, since his sins are greater because of the dignity of the office. 2. I resolved also to spend a continuous Holy Hour ever day in the presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Treasure in Clay)
"..The principal excellence of the most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass consists in being essentially, and in the very highest degree, identical with that which was offered on the Cross of Calvary: with this sole difference that the sacrifice on the Cross was bloody, and made once for all, and did on that one occasion satisfy fully for all the sins of the world; while the sacrifice of the altar is an unbloody sacrifice, which can be repeated an infinite number of times, and was instituted in order to apply in detail that universal ransom which Jesus paid for us on Calvary..."
St. Leonard of Port Maurice.

“We belong to God by his grace. What else do we wish, then, but to please him? If we are contradicted, this is not surprising; what merit is there in not
being crossed? And who is there that can escape it? For every little contradiction, should one stop doing good? Good which gives glory to God?” – St. Vincent de Paul

"Trust the past to God's mercy, the present to God's love, and the future to God's providence. " - St. Augustine of Hippo
"One day, through the Rosary and the Scapular, Our Lady will save the world."--St. Dominic
“The poor cannot be judged by their outward appearance, not by their show of wit, for very often they do not look nor seem like intelligent beings, so
rough, and homely are they.”
– St. Vincent de Paul
"When you see the storm coming, if you seek safety in that firm refuge which is Mary, there will be no danger of your wavering or going down."  - St. Josemaria Escriva
"If we do not risk everything for God, we will never do anything great for Him." St. Louis de Montfort (1673.-1716.)
Always be happily at peace with your conscience, reflecting that you are in the service of an infinitely good Father, who comes down to His creatures out of sheer goodness, to raise and transform them in Him, their Creator. St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"In all human love it must be realized that every man promises a woman, and every woman promises a man that which only God alone can give, namely, perfect happiness. One of the reasons why so many marriages are shipwrecked is because as the young couple leave the altar, they fail to realize that human feelings tire and the enthusiasm of the honeymoon is not the same as the more solid happiness of enduring human love. One of the greatest trials of marriage is the absence of solitude. In the first moments of human love, one does not see the little hidden deformities which later on appear." Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Three to Get Married)

"God sent an angel to tell St. Joseph: "Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife!" And I say to you: Do not be afraid to take Mary as your Mother in the journey of life! Let Mary be a model for you of how to follow Jesus. Do not be afraid to enter into confidence with her, to entrust to her maternal hands all problems, all concerns, all plans and expectations. And, above all, confide in her the plan that concerns your entire life." Pope  St. John Paul II
"Nor should you become confused trying to understand whether you consented or not. Do everything with an upright intention; this uprightness which must always be present in your actions, and whenever you valiantly and generously fight the evil tricks of the evil spirit."  St.  Pio of Pietrelcina
"Let yourself be taken over by the light of Christ and spread His light where ever you go."  Pope St. John Paul II (1920-2005)
"Just as a mirror, which reflects all things, is set in its own container, so too the rational soul is placed in the fragile container of the body. In this way, the body is governed in its earthly life by the soul, and the soul contemplates heavenly things through faith."
- Saint Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), Feast day September 18
“Religion does not limit the powers of the affections, for our Blessed Savior sanctifies and approves in us all the endearing ties and connections of our existence. Religion alone can bind the cord over which neither circumstances, time, nor death have any power.”
– St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
“Man is the shadow, who would be the substance; the pendulum who would swing without being suspended from the clock; the painting which would deny that an artist’s hand ever touched it. The most daring of all sins is that of self-deification, and it is possible only because of a divine creation for who would want to be God unless he had come from the hand of God?” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (The World’s First Love)

“We must fear God out of love, not love Him out of fear.” (St. Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor of the Church)
"I remind you that I belong with great ardor to everyone and for this reason I am suffering immensely for all."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina

“The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist.” (Pope St. Gregory the Great, Doctor of the Church)
“Let us admit the fact before picking up stones to cast at the adulteresses abroad, we ought to turn the searchlight into our own consciences. How many of us who protest against the destruction of churches and synagogues abroad ever go into a church or synagogue? What is the use of the world overthrowing a Hitler or a Stalin if it keeps the spirit that breeds them? To oppose a nation justly as the enemy of God we must believe in God. We may not smash its idols and keep our own.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Whence Comes Wars)
"Prayer is the place of refuge for every worry, a foundation for cheerfulness, a source of constant happiness, a protection against sadness."  Saint John Chrysostom

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

“Let us bind ourselves tightly to the Sorrowful Heart of our Heavenly Mother and reflect on it’s boundless grief and how precious is our soul.”
“Always stay close to this Heavenly Mother, because she is the sea to be crossed to reach the shores of Eternal Splendour.”

"May the Mother of Jesus and our Mother, always smile on your spirit, obtaining for it, from her Most Holy Son, every heavenly blessing.”
- Saint  Pio of Pietrelcina
"There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the holy Rosary. With the holy Rosary, we will save ourselves; we will sanctify ourselves; we will console our Lord, and obtain the salvation of many souls.” - Sr. Lucia of Fatima
"If anyone does not wish to have Mary Immaculate for his Mother, he will not have Christ for his Brother."  --Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Martyr, 1894-1941 AD

"I long to fly to Mary’s mother arms, To rest upon that spotless throne of bliss; And, sheltered there from troubles and alarms, For the first time to feel her gentle kiss. -St. Therese of Lisieux

"Never think that physical distance can separate souls which God has united with the ties of his love." St.  Pio  of Pietrelcina (Pastor of Souls)
"DO NOT open your heart to every man, but discuss your affairs with one who is wise and who fears God. Do not keep company with young people and strangers. Do not fawn upon the rich, and do not be fond of mingling with the great. Associate with the humble and the simple, with the devout and virtuous, and with them speak of edifying things. Be not intimate with any woman, but generally commend all good women to God. Seek only the intimacy of God and of His angels, and avoid the notice of men.
We ought to have charity for all men but familiarity with all is not expedient. Sometimes it happens that a person enjoys a good reputation among those who do not know him, but at the same time is held in slight regard by those who do. Frequently we think we are pleasing others by our presence and we begin rather to displease them by the faults they find in us."  The Imitation of Christ  Thomas, `a Kempis The Eighth Chapter
"If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he [should] desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?" - Cyprian of Carthage [A.D. 251]
“The reason why Christ is unknown today is because His Mother is unknown.”  - Blessed John Henry Newman, Cardinal deacon of San Giorgio in Velabro

"To serve the Queen of Heaven is already to reign there, and to live under her commands is more than to govern."  - St. John Vianney
"If you should fail, be humble, make a resolution to be submissive to God's will and then get up, and carry on."
~ St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"If anyone desires to attain unto the glory of eternity, he must study to be a child: pure in heart, mouth and deed." St. Thomas Aquinas (1225.–1274.)
"You will never complain about offenses , no matter where they came from, remembering that Jesus was saturated with ignominy from the malice of men He Himself had aided. You will excuse everyone with Christian charity, keeping before your eyes the example of the divine Master who excused even his crucifiers before the Father." St. Pio of Pietrelcina
"The goal and target of our life is He, the Christ who awaits us -- each one singly and altogether -- to lead us across the boundaries of time to the eternal embrace of the God who loves us." Saint John Paul II
"Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices."  --St. Teresa of Avila
"Even while living in the world, the heart of Mary was so filled with motherly tenderness and compassion for men that no-one ever suffered so much for their own pains, as Mary suffered for the pains of her children."  - Saint Jerome, Father and Doctor of the Church
“Every step we take all day long is a step of nature or a step of grace.”
– St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

“When the hand of death is laid upon those whom you love and your heart seems torn in two, climb to the Hill of Calvary to be consoled by the Mother of Sorrows who is also the Cause of Our Joy.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Man for All Media)

Monday, September 14, 2015

“Oh cherished cross! Through thee my most bitter trials are replete with graces!” (St. Paul of the Cross)
"When there is no time for both, meditation is to be preferred to vocal prayer, because it is more fruitful."  St Pio of Pietrelcina (In My Own Words, Page 20)
"Pray, pray to the Lord with me, because the whole world needs prayer. And every day, when your heart especially feels the loneliness of life, pray. Pray to the Lord because even God needs our prayers."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina
The fullness of love in all the mothers of this earth could never equal the love Mary has for each one of us." ~ St. John Bosco
“Every unhappy soul in the world has a cross embedded on it. The cross was never meant to be on the inside, but only on the outside. When the Israelites were bitten by the serpents, and the poison seeped within, Moses planted a brazen serpent on a stick and all who looked on it were healed….So the Son of Man came in the likeness of man, but was without sin, and all who look upon Him on His cross are saved. In like manner, the inner cross disappears when one catches a vision of the great outer Cross on Calvary.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Peace of Soul)

"Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools. You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone.” - Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
“Unless God Almighty sends to this world a great saint we cannot expect deliverance from the spirit of evil. Why a saint? Because the rest of us are too close to our times…The world will not be saved by anyone living in it now, but by someone lifted up from it.” Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

"Love our Lady. And she will obtain abundant grace to help you conquer in your daily struggle."
- St. Josemaria Escriva
"The height of perfection is to love our enemies, and to pray for them as did Lord Jesus." St. Thomas Aquinas (1225.–1274.)
“Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race. The knot of Eve's disobedience was untied by Mary's obedience: what the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith.” --St. Irenaeus
"Love Jesus, love Him a lot, but for this you must love sacrifice more. Love should be bitter." St.  Pio of  Pietrelcina

"God loves us, and this is shown by the fact that he tolerates us when we offend Him." St. Pio  of Pietrelcina
"He delights in forgiving and raising us up, in bearing us in Himself, in His purity and infinite sanctity."    Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity
"Only after the Last Judgment will Mary get any rest; from now until then, she is much too busy with her children."  ~St. John Vianney
“Our Lord will counsel you what to do.” – St. Vincent de Paul
“The enthusiasm for false gods cannot be drowned by an indifference to the true God. No secularized, non-religious theory of political freedom is strong enough to overcome them. A people who lack the strength of an ultimate conviction, cannot overcome their faith or their false absolute. The effective answer to a false religion is not indifference to all religion, but the practice of a true religion. If they have politics into a false religion, we shall have to see that religion has something to say about politics.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Philosophies at War)

“As you cannot live a natural life unless you nourish yourself, so you cannot lead a supernatural life unless you nourish yourself. This is the Holy Eucharist in which you receive the Bread of Life by which you are not only united to Christ, but to all who eat of that bread in the fellowship of the Body of Christ.”
—Ven. Fulton J. Sheen
"This heart of mine is Yours...my Jesus, so take this heart of mine, fill it with Your love and then order me to do whatever You wish."  St. Pio of Pietrelcina
“This permanent wound in human nature cannot be explained away by biological evolution, as we tried to do a few years ago, because its essence is not the will to survive but pride which biology cannot touch.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Philosophies at War)

"There's nothing that can stop God's love for you." - St. Peter Julian Eymard
“As no weeds grew in Eden so no sin would arise in Mary, the paradise of the Incarnation. A barn door cannot fittingly serve as an entrance to a castle.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Three to Get Married)
"The Son of God became man for our salvation but only in Mary and through Mary."
- Saint Louis Marie de Montfort

"Say the Holy Rosary. Blessed be that monotony of Hail Marys which purifies the monotony of your sins."
- St. Josemaria Escriva
“Our Lord, eternal and infinite, is the splendor of glory, the fountainhead and source of all grace and beauty.”
– St. Vincent de Paul
“There are three possible kinds of God: the god of one’s own ego, in which the atheist believes, and which is also the god of modern confusionism; the god of nature, of stone and gold and silver, which belonged to the old religions of idolatry; and the Supreme God, who made both man and nature, and redeemed them both upon the Cross. Those who tell us that they deny the existence of God are merely substituting one god for another.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (On Being Human)

"The more bitterness you have, the more love you will receive." St. Pio of Pietrelcina
“Every step we take all day long is a step of nature or a step of grace.”
– St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
"In Him I find everything." - St. Theresa of the Andes
"Every gift of God is capable of producing some evil through the abuse of creatures such as fire, flesh, wine. Excess of any of these constitute evils; elimination of all of them would destroy cooking, families, and conviviality. Nothing in the universe is intrinsically evil; God saw that it was good." Archbishop Fulton Sheen

ST. TERESA OF AVILA ON THE POWER OF HOLY WATER

"I have found by experience that there is nothing from which the devils fly more quickly than from holy water. They also fly from the cross, but they return almost immediately. Certainly, the power of holy water must be great; for my part, my soul feels particular comfort in taking it, and very generally a refreshment and interior delight which I cannot express, resembling an inward joy which comforts my whole soul. This is not fancy, or something, which has happened to me only once; it has happened again and again and I have observed it most attentively. It is let us say, as if someone very hot and thirsty were to drink from a jug of cold water: he would feel the refreshment throughout his body. I often reflect on the great importance of everything ordained by the Church and it makes me very happy to find that those words of the Church are so powerful that they impart their power to the water and make it so very different from water which has not been blessed.
"One night, too, about this time, I thought the devils were stifling me; and when the nuns had sprinkled a great deal of holy water about I saw a huge crowd of them running away as quickly as though they were about to fling themselves down a steep place.
"I will only describe something that happened to me one night of All Souls. I was in an oratory: I had said one nocturne and was repeating some very devotional prayers which follow it -- they are extremely devotional: we have them in our office-book -- when actually the devil himself alighted on the book, to prevent me from finishing the prayer. I made the sign of the Cross and he went away. I then began again and he came back. I think I began that prayer three times and not until I had sprinkled some holy water on him could I finish it. At the same moment I saw several souls coming out of purgatory: their time there must have been nearly up and I thought that perhaps the devil was trying to impede their deliverance."
- St. Teresa of Avila, Doctor of the Church
"If angels could be jealous of men, they would be so for one reason: Holy Communion." ~ St. Maximilian Kolbe
"We belong to God in all things and without reserve, without any exception whatsoever." St. Francis de Sales (1567.-1622)
“One cannot desire freedom from the Cross when one is especially chosen for the Cross.” (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross—Edith Stein)
“Mary is the sure path to our meeting with Christ. Devotion to the Mother of the Lord, when it is genuine, is always an impetus to a life guided by the spirit and values of the Gospel.”
~Saint John Paul II~

“If God really is, then it is absurd to say that He is one thing in the fifteenth century and another in the twentieth. This is equivalent to saying that a thing is true at three o’clock but false at half, past four and that two apples plus two apples make four apples on Monday but not on Friday. That all this should be called progress is a mystery, as if there could be progress without a fixed term.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Religion Without God)
"Before, by yourself, you couldn't. Now, you've turned to our Lady, and with her, how easy!"
-St. Josemaria Escriva

"It is not possible to pay God as much as we owe Him." St. Thomas Aquinas (1225.–1274.)
"If I ever become a Saint — I surely be one of "darkness". I will continually be absent from Heaven — to light the light of those in darkness on earth."
- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

Blessed Feast of St. Gregory the Great!

“There are in truth three states of the converted: the beginning, the middle, and the perfection. In the beginning, they experience the charms of sweetness; in the middle, the contests of temptation; and in the end, the fullness of perfection.”
“Every day you provide your bodies with good food to keep them from failing. In the same way, your good works should be the daily nourishment of your hearts. Your bodies are fed with food and your spirits with good works. You aren’t to deny your soul, which is going to live forever, what you grant to your body, which is going to die.”
“The Holy Bible is like a mirror before our mind’s eye. In it we see our inner face. From the Scriptures we can learn our spiritual deformities and beauties. And there too we discover the progress we are making and how far we are from perfection.”
“If we knew at what time we were to depart from this world, we would be able to select a season for pleasure and another for repentance. But God, who has promised pardon to every repentant sinner, has not promised us tomorrow. Therefore we must always dread the final day, which we can never foresee. This very day is a day of truce, a day for conversion. And yet we refuse to cry over the evil we have done! Not only do we not weep for the sins we have committed, we even add to them.”
St. Gregory the Great, pray for us!
“In religions such as Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism and the like, man is the wooer and God the wooed; man the seeker, God the found. IN the Judaic-Christian tradition, the role of man to God is that of mirror to light, echo to voice. What has revealed the love of God where we are concerned, is that He has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through Him. That love resides not in our showing any love for God, but in His showing love for us first, when He sent out His Son to be atonement for our sins, and therefore our Saviour.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (The True Meaning of Christmas)

“Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His Mercy from us?” (St. Vincent de Paul)
“Believe me, there is no more powerful means to obtain God’s grace than to employ the intercessions of the Holy Virgin.”
~Saint Philip Neri~
“Those who lose sight of the goal often concentrate on mere motion and try to derive pleasure from it. They delight in turning the pages of a book, but never finish the story; they pick up brushes, but never finish a picture; they travel the seas, but know no ports. Their zest is not in the achievement of a destiny but rather in gyration and action for the mere sake of movement.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Way to Happiness)
“While we dilly-dally with our plans, God raises up others to do what he had first asked of us.”
– St. Vincent de Paul
